Instructional texts to use in courses

On this page, you will find several examples of instructional text that you can use in your teaching. Particularly when you want students to work with different types of media or specific features in the learning platform or other programs, it’s a good idea to have clear instructions. Copy the texts in their entirety, along with links to guides, and paste them into a context on your course page.

This is an example text that you can copy to use as a more general information to students about how to work with video and its usage in your course. Place the text in the course introduction section (General). It is a good idea to put it in a Page resource to keep the course page cleaner.

In this course you will be using media recordings (video/audio) that is going to be published by you in a discussion forum or as an assignment.

Linnaeus University offers a free software (Kaltura Capture) for recording and uploading of video to Moodle from your computer. It is available for Windows and Mac (but not for mobile devices or Chromebooks). Kaltura Capture can be downloaded from My Media in Moodle (Moodle -> Help & Resources->My Media). With it you can record both your web cam/microphone and what is happening on your computer screen (for instance a power point presentation).

You don’t have to use this software but can record in many different ways. Some tips on how to record can be found here: https://serviceportalen.lnu.se/en-us/article/1170461

Regardless how you record (even from mobile devices) you should upload the finished recording to My Media in Moodle. That makes it much easier to use it in your course.

Texts about Zoom

This is an example text that you can copy to inform the students about the general use of Zoom, how it works and how it will be used in your course. Place the text in the course introduction section (General). We recommend using a Page resource for this to keep the course page clutter to a minimum,

We will use Zoom for meetings and seminars in this course. Zoom is available to you as a student when you log in using your student account and you can use it yourself to conduct meetings/discuss with fellow students and others. We highly recommend that you (if possible) install the Zoom app on your computer and/or mobile device for the best experience, but you can also join meeting via a web browser if it’s not possible to install. Make sure to log in to Zoom via the app or our Zoom portal at least once. That way your account gets created in Zoom and you can be ”found” by fellow students and/or your teachers when they want to invite you to a meeting or a group chat.

This is an example text that you can copy and modify to inform your students on how to particpate in Zoom meetins that you have scheduled. Place the text in the description field for the Zoom meeting.

We will meet in Zoom. You can join the meeting via your computer or mobile device. We recommend that you first log in to Zoom in the app for best experience, but for those who can not install the app you can join via your browser.

Please read the following guides before the meeting:

This is an example text that you can copy and modify to inform your students on how to use the Zoom Bookings activity if you use that. Place the text in the description field for the Zoom Booking activity. Learn more about Zoom Booking as a teacher here: https://serviceportalen.lnu.se/en-us/article/1320007

In this course we are using an activity called ”Zoom Booking”. Through that you, as a student, can create your own online meetings and invite your fellow students, for example to create meetings for your work group. In order to invite people from your course (and other courses) both you and your fellow students must have logged in to the Zoom service at least once to be able to be invited. Remind each other to log in properly.

This is an example text that you can copy to inform your students how they can use the Zoom team chat function to collaborate in groups, have online meetings and more.

Zoom offers you the possibility to create chat channels where you, as a team/group, can communicate, send files/pictures and easily start team meetings with a push of a button.

This is a great way to stay in contact and collaborate within a project, subject or any other work group. You can create as many channels as you like and also join fellow students channels.
